Spirituality has been a saving grace on my journey to healing from narcissistic abuse. Connecting to a power bigger than yourself or a spiritual community can be a soothing balm for the raw wounds of a trauma survivor.

All survivors have a right to their unique beliefs and faith. Yet I would be remiss if I did not bring up some of the things I see in the New Age spiritual community that are toxic, in my opinion, and actually bring shame and blame to victims of abuse.

It’s important to talk about anything that may hinder or impede a survivor’s journey to authentic healing. Certain spiritual ideologies can perpetuate a larger victim-shaming rhetoric in society.

I’m going to cover three of the biggest distortions I see in so-called spirituality that can prove harmful and limiting to the healing journey.

Our Pain Is An Illusion

In this scenario, we are the creators of our own pain due to our faulty negative thoughts, because “love is all that is real.” Yet true love never exists within an abusive relationship.
