As a society, we tend to see physical abuse as more deadly than mental abuse. Yet, emotional trauma often has a deeper catastrophic impact on our lives that far outreaches physical pain.
Your ability to awaken emotional pain through your memory is extremely profound. It stands in stark contrast to your inability to re-experience physical pain. Your body forgets the physical trauma but holds onto the psychological trauma long after it is over.
Now don’t get me wrong, physical abuse can and often does affect your personality and damages your mental health. However, when it comes to mental abuse only one single episode of emotional trauma is enough to impair your emotional health for a very long time, maybe even a lifetime.
Although I am reminded frequently of the physical damage my abuser inflicted on my body, it is no comparison to the mental distress I feel when I remember the deranged and elaborate acts of treachery he pulled, simply to gain power and control over my emotions...
