The Danger of Gray Rocking
The grey rock method may be enough to deter some narcissists, but it is not safe for every victim of abuse.
Narcissists are individuals who crave the admiration of others. They strive for attention and cannot endure criticism or any type of disappointment. Narcissists are a False Self. They wear a mask and will do whatever it takes to keep that mask in place. This includes controlling and abusing others.
Being related to, working for, or being in a relationship with a narcissist is a traumatizing and challenging predicament. Going no contact, distancing, and getting out of the relationship with a narcissist is the best option, but it is not always an option for everyone.
If you have been struggling with your relationship with narcissists in your life you have no doubt heard about the gray rock method.
The phrase ‘grey rock’ is a metaphor for a way to defuse further abuse from a narcissist or other toxic person. This method involves communicating in an uninteresting way when interacting with them.
You become unresponsive, similar to a rock.
You don’t feed their appetite for drama and attention. You don’t show emotion, you don’t say anything interesting, you don’t disclose any personal information, and…
