The Injured Narcissist

When a narcissist is injured, they will be volatile and psychotic seemingly out of nowhere.

It took me a really long time to understand why my former partner was so easily wounded whenever I didn’t agree with him. It wasn’t until our relationship was over and he was diagnosed with Anti-Social Personality Disorder that I finally knew what was going on.

I discovered a term I had not heard before and I finally had my answer for why all of his responses were out of proportion to the situation.

The Narcissistic Injury

When a narcissist or sociopath feels abandoned or criticized or has lost something they feel they deserve they will experience a narcissistic injury.

According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM):

“Vulnerability in self-esteem makes individuals with narcissistic personality disorder very sensitive to ‘injury’ from criticism or defeat. Although they may not show it outwardly, criticism may haunt these individuals and leave them feeling humiliated, degraded, hollow, and empty. They may react with disdain, rage, or defiant counterattack.”
